Sangam, WAGGGS’ fourth World Centre, was first imagined at the 1956 WAGGGS International Commissioners’ meeting in New Delhi. The idea to build a World Centre in the Asia Pacific Region was proposed.

How we got here
1950 – 1960
In the 1950s, WAGGGS decided to build a World Centre in the Asia Pacific region. Lakshmi Mazumdar – head of the Sangam Planning Committee – worked hard to make sure that India was the chosen country.
1963 — 1964
1966 – Present Day
2000 – Present Day
Sangam has grown and changed with the times. New amenities, buildings and modern equipment have been added thanks to the hard work and generosity of supporters from around the world. Despite these changes, this unique Centre for international friendship and understanding has never strayed from its purpose as a place for new experiences and exploration of our world through Guiding and Scouting.
Sangam Building
The Sangam building was designed by Bombay-based architects Mody and Colgan. Each set of arches has significance for World Girl Guiding and Scouting:
- Ten arches above the bedrooms – the ten original Guide Laws
- Three arches above Sangam’s front entrance – the three parts of the Guide Promise
- Four arches above the car port – the four World Centres that were in place at the time of construction
