Discover the magic of walking on maintained snow trails and experience the wonder of hiking off the beaten path on snowshoes. This is the perfect event for outdoor enthusiasts who want to explore winter without strapping on skis!

Who is this event for?

  • Winter Walking Week is open to anyone – individuals, families, friends, and groups are all welcome. It’s an especially good fit for Ranger/Rovers and university Guide/Scout groups, leaders looking for an adventure without their group, physically active Trefoil Guild groups, and families with older children. Participants do not have to be members of Guiding/Scouting.
  • A moderate level of fitness is required – the walks are taken at a gentle pace with plenty of breaks, but do involve walking for several hours and steep up and down hill sections. Walking boots are required and walking poles are recommended (we have some available to borrow).
  • There is a recommended minimum age of 14. Younger children with hiking experience (any season) may also be able to join subject to approval prior to booking.

What activities are involved?

Winter Walking Week includes four guided winter walks on groomed snow trails, three of which include gondola/cable car rides, and one optional sledding day. There are lots of opportunities for fun and friendship as you explore the magic of the Swiss Alps in winter. In the evenings we offer varied evening programmes with opportunities to learn about Swiss traditions, get to know our international staff, and put your competitive spirit into action!

Are the trails icy? Do I need crampons, snowshoes, or special equipment?

The trails are compacted snow (similar to ski pistes but narrower). There can be small icy or muddy patches, especially where trails go through forest. Three of our walks use cable cars to reach higher elevations where there is more snow and therefore little chance of ice. For the fourth walk we plan the route a few days before, taking account of the weather and snow conditions to find the best trail.

Crampons are not required. Walking boots with ankle support and good grip are required. Hiking poles are recommended. Some people like to use microspikes or traction cleats (Yaktrax is a well-known brand of these) to give more grip on the snow, especially when walking up or downhill, however, these are not required.

Snowshoeing takes place on different trails (in deep snow). If you would like to try snowshoeing Our Chalet has snowshoes available to rent for a small fee and you could try this one evening or on the free day if you are not sledding.

What if we don’t want to sled?

The sledding day is optional and you specify at time of booking whether or not you would like to include it. If you do not book the sledding day then you have one free day to plan your own activities or relax at Our Chalet.
